Modern Motherhood, Powered by Community and Merienda

How a partnership between She Loves Data Philippines and Goldilocks brought Filipino rituals of warmth and familiarity into a conversation about AI.

Manila, Philippines — Last May 27, mothers gathered around laptops, coffee cups, and plates of ensaymada and egg pie for She Loves Data Philippines’ “AI for the Modern Mom Bootcamp,” a learning session designed to help women navigate the growing role of artificial intelligence in everyday life.

Artificial intelligence may have been the topic, but the atmosphere never drifted into the cold efficiency associated with technology conferences. The energy was communal. Conversations moved from productivity tools to parenting in the digital age, from side hustles to prompt engineering.

But amid all the talk of technological transformation and personal development, a uniquely Filipino ritual grounded the room: merienda.

Part of that warmth came from an unexpected yet thoughtful partnership between global non-profit group She Loves Data (Philippines Chapter) and Goldilocks, the Filipino bakery and food brand long woven into celebrations, merienda rituals, and family gatherings across generations.

Throughout the afternoon, familiar Goldilocks merienda staples, from ensaymada to mamon and egg pie, became part of the conversations unfolding around the room. For many attendees, that familiarity helped soften what could have otherwise been an intimidating discussion around technology. Learning became less formal and more communal, grounded in the kind of everyday moments Filipinos naturally gather around.

The partnership between She Loves Data Philippines and Goldilocks reflected a broader truth about modern motherhood today: women are constantly navigating multiple roles at once. They are caregivers, professionals, entrepreneurs, learners, and community builders, often all within the same day.

In many ways, the partnership reflected the emotional reality of contemporary motherhood. Mothers are no longer divided between the domestic and the ambitious, the soft and the technical, the nurturing and the intellectual. Today’s modern mother occupies all of these worlds simultaneously. She may spend the morning managing household logistics, the afternoon learning AI tools, and the evening helping with her children’s homework, all while carrying the invisible mental load and emotional labor that still defines much of motherhood. The women in the bootcamp were trying to build more capable, adaptive, and sustainable lives.

As participants left the bootcamp, Goldilocks treats tucked inside the She Loves Data tote bags became a form of pasalubong, a familiar Filipino gesture of bringing something home to share, enjoy later, or pass along to family.

Even in an AI-driven world, mothers still gather and exchange stories around food. The future may be changing rapidly, but some rituals evolve beautifully alongside it.

The future, as it turns out, still has room for merienda.
